Mahonia aquifolium is also know as Oregon grape. The Oregon grape has a suckering habit, so forms a speading dome that is very useful for adding interest in woodland areas or in any shaded area. The glossy green leaves have a slight spike to them so can act as a pest deterrent, these turn a shade of purple in the winter. Above these stand a bright yellow cluster flower with a sweet scent through until Winter providing esential nectar for the winter collonies of bumblebees and other pollinaters.
Prune every year to premote growth, using well rotted garden compost or manure will help too.
