Ornamental grasses have seen a surge in popularity thanks to garden designers such as Piet Oudolf who creates wonderful prairie style planting plans. Oudolf’s designs incorporate impressive swathes of grasses interspersed with herbaceous perennials for a truly dynamic effect.
In this collection of ornamental grasses, the Arbour Landscape Solutions team has aimed to provide a variety of colours, sizes, and textures that will complement any planting scheme.
Plants for sensory gardens
It’s easy to overlook the value of ornamental grasses in a planting scheme, simply because the flowers are not brightly coloured. But consider the movement and the sound generated when grasses are touched by a light summer breeze. Team that with the texture of leaves and seedheads and you have a plant that appeals to at least three of the five senses.
What to plant with ornamental grasses
Many of the herbaceous perennials available to order online from Arbour Landscape Solutions combine beautifully with ornamental grasses.
Adrian Bloom’s winter garden near Diss in Norfolk uses ornamental grasses to great effect by teaming them with Cornus, sedums, heathers, and evergreens. It’s well worth a visit if you’re ever in East Anglia.
Grass seed and wildflower turf
Of course, ornamental grasses needn’t be pot grown plants. You can achieve a prairie-like effect by using wildflower turf with a good proportion of grasses in the seedmix.
Alternatively, save £££’s by growing a mix of native grasses and perennials from seed. This wildflower seed for a traditional hay meadow contains seven different species of grass and 18 flowering wildflower species. The effect is really quite pleasing to the eye.
However you choose to incorporate ornamental grasses into your planting plan, the Arbour Landscape Solutions team is at your disposal should you need help or advice.
