The Garden Of Two Tales

Project Type: Show Garden

This 42 square metre show garden designed by Daniel March manages to pack a lot into a small space. The overall ambience is of peace and serenity and it would be impossible to sit in this garden without feeling curious about the plants themselves, visiting wildlife and how that fascinating water feature actually works.

A worthy winner of a Gold Medal at RHS Hampton Court 2025. This garden certainly deserved to be awarded Best Garden Of Curiosity by the judges AND voted People’s Choice in it’s category.

Superb work from a young, innovative garden designer.

Brief

The client wanted to create a garden which was intended for seating and taking a break from todays fast-moving society. Their preference was for a muted colour palette punctuating lush, shady planting.

In addition, they wanted to use water within the space to complement the relaxing atmosphere created by the the planting.

Challenge

Designing and building a show garden is always a challenge, particularly at such a high profile show as RHS Hampton Court. After all, every aspect of the space will be judged by an enormous variety of people all with different tastes.

Dan tells us that his biggest challenge with designing The Garden Of Two Tales was finding the right balance of light and shade. He wanted to create enough shade to imbue a feeling of being hugged by nature, yet didnt want the space to be dominated by the trees. (We think hes nailed it!)

Solution

What can we say other than congratulations Dan, this garden is an absolute triumph? The generously sized seating area in this garden feels nestled within the space and is cocooned by lush planting all around and overhead. The vertical elements of the garden act as semi-opaque screens awakening a sense of curiosity without creating sensory overload. Its a calming space where racing thoughts can be slowed, conversations held and a sense of wellbeing nurtured.

We especially love the innovative use of limestone slim-setts with self binding gravel for a natural look and feel to the garden.

This garden is to be relocated to Essex after the show and we are fully confident that its new custodians will be delighted with it.
