Where to Grow Wildflower Roof Matting – Soil Type and Aspect

As the name suggests, Wildflower Roof Matting has been especially developed to cope with the sometimes harsh conditions on a green roof. However, it is also perfectly happy at ground level. Great for free draining soils. Loves sunshine but can tolerate shade too.

The 37 species of UK native wild flowers and grasses have been carefully selected for their ability to cope with extremes of heat, cold, wind and drought.  Green roof growing medium is very free draining in order to minimise loading on the building, and so each of these plant species are able to tolerate dry soils.

Creating a living roof using Wildflower Matting offers instant ground cover, excellent insulation and superb wildlife habitat from the get-go.  Your wildflowers should be well irrigated for at least 2 weeks after installation. Once the plants are established, an occasional soaking during prolonged periods of drought is to be recommended.

Caring for your Wildflower Roof Matting

A wildflower roof is low maintenance - not no maintenance. We recommend cutting back excess vegetation in autumn and removing any clippings.

You will also need to weed out any rogue tree seedlings that have blown in from the wider environment.

Key Points

• Your Wildflower Roof Matting will be mown before harvest so that plants are not damaged during transportation. The flowering plants will not be blooming when it is delivered

• Depending on the time of year it can take a few weeks for plants to establish, grow and start blooming. If you would like it to flower in its first summer we recommend installing Wildflower Roof Matting before the end of March.

• Each of the species will respond differently to soil type, local weather conditions and care regimes. In fact the balance of species changes from year to year which means that your wildflower roof will continue to fascinate you more with every season.
