Grow a holly hedge for privacy and security

Holly is the ultimate in Winter foliage in the UK. Those deep green shiny leaves are synonymous with Christmas and can easily be cut for indoor decoration. Holly (Ilex aquifolium) also plays an essential part in the lifecycle of the holly blue butterfly.

What makes holly such a good hedging plant?

It's slow growing - so will only need trimming once a year. Plus it has hard prickly leaves which are great at deterring intruders. If you live in a rural or semi-rural area and find your plants are sometimes eaten by deer or rabbits, Holly is the ideal hedging plant for you. It's rarely eaten by wildlife. The disadvantages of holly as a hedging plant is that it can be slow to establish. It's not a fast grower and dislikes being moved as bare root stock. Which means that if you want a holly hedge you could either buy young plants in pots. (you'll need protective clothing if you plan on planting a whole row of them) or you can buy good quality instant hedging.

Definitely no waiting for the plants to grow. And as an added bonus no complicated pruning to shape your hedge. Everything is done for you. All you need to do is place your order and dig a trench where you want your hedge to be. When your hedge is delivered you can forklift the 1.2 metre lengths into place backfill the trench and irrigate. There will be no gaps between plants and the hedge will have a beautifully straight top and sides.

Width of plants 60-80cm approx.
Length of plants 2.4m approx.
Weight: 80-150Kg per 2.4 m section
Up to 65 linear metres of hedging can be delivered by artic, up to 35 linear metres by rigid lorry, up to 25 linear metres on a 7.5t lorry & up to 10m on a luton van.
